Hello everyone, I'm Chris and I have been a member of BODS since late 2022, when I took part in their version of the festive classic A Christmas Carol. Having not done amateur dramatics since university nearly 20 years ago, I had been keen to get involved in acting since moving to the Wychwoods in April of that year - everyone who knew those involved in BODS said how friendly and welcoming they were, and so it seemed like the natural choice to audition for them. Being part of the Christmas Carol production showed how true this was - I ended up with two parts in the show (including having to rapidly change costume into a fat suit and back again) and it became a real family affair, with my wife Kate and son Henry also featuring in the cast.

After the great success of that production I was keen for more, and Mandy suggested taking part in a one act, serious drama which she entered into two Oxfordshire drama festivals. This was definitely a step up, as I played the lead role in Blue, and as such had to portray a doctor grappling with depression and anxiety. I was so grateful to Mandy for believing in my abilities, and along with the hugely talented cast and crew of fellow BODS performers and technicians, I think we did the powerful script justice. At least that is what the playwright said when she came to watch us at the first festival!

After that excursion to much more serious drama, I was keen to return to something more light-hearted, and so most recently I performed in the BODS pantomime - as the evil Uncle in Tony Mellerick's hilarious version of Aladdin crossed with Puss in Boots (if you didn't see it, check out the clips on our YouTube ) This was my first time singing a solo on stage, so another step outside of my comfort zone.

Throughout my time with BODS I have been struck by the warmth and friendliness of everyone involved in the shows and Mandy's regular drama classes. I have never met a more inclusive, approachable and fun-loving group, which makes it feel like a really safe space for trying new things and pushing boundaries. BODS has everyone from total newbies to drama who are taking their first steps into public performing, through to really experienced and highly talented actors, so there is space for you whatever your level of experience and confidence (which will only grow once joining.) My own level of comfort with public speaking and presenting has definitely increased since joining BODS, and so I would really encourage anyone interested in any element of the performing arts to get involved.
